5 things you need to know from Day 1 EmTech Next 2023

MIT Technology Review

Hello There,

Yesterday was quite a day. We opened EmTech Next and I was lucky enough to hear from leaders in the space of digital transformation about how emerging technologies are transforming the way we work.

I wanted to share some of what struck me about this first day of EmTech Next.

5 takeaways from Day 1 of EmTech Next 2023

  1. Generative AI will change the nature of how we learn, said Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Chief Innovation Officer at ManpowerGroup in his Humans in the Age of AI session. He explained why digital transformation is more about human talent, rather than technology alone, and told us what skills future leaders will need to be able to deal with a world of technological change. Hint: stay flexible.
  2. Listen, listen, listen: Ragy Thomas spoke about how AI will help brands better understand customer sentiment and how generative AI can give chatbots and other customer-focused systems a near-human feel—if they're used correctly that is.
  3. Jim Swanson, EVP & CIO at Johnson & Johnson talked about how every company, regardless of industry, needs to be a technology company as it relates to business outcomes.
  4. It's a great time to be a CIO – this came from both Pritha Mehra at USPS and Jim Swanson at Johnson & Johnson because of the opportunities that emerging technology presents.
  5. AI is changing the idea of "expertise" in real time. Vanessa Tanicien said that learning isn't about what you know but what you can ingest and apply in day to day work. She also had some terrific tips on how to learn and remember new skills—and share them with others.

I hope you get a chance to catch the EmTech Next sessions on-demand if you weren't able to join us live today. And if you weren't registered, I hope you'll join us next year or at another MIT Technology Review event.

Thanks for joining us today,

Will Douglas Heaven
