Did you know that there are extra eyes and ears keeping watch on your safety around the coast? Whether you're setting off on a sailing adventure or challenge or just a relaxed trip in a motor launch, we're the eyes and ears that give you and your crew an added safety back up. We're on call on VHF CH 65. It's a free service too! We do it because we want to help keep people safe around our coasts and as a charity, we rely on the generous support from members of the public and people like you. HRH The Princess Royal at NCI Gosport – it's one of the many stations looking out for sailors Helping to minimise the risks of being at sea, National Coastwatch stations can be called on VHF CH65 – to provide radio checks, tidal information, weather checks and live updates on local conditions. We're a friendly bunch of highly trained volunteers and always happy to help you and everyone in the yachting community. Epic adventuresJust one of NCI's satisfied 'customers' is Ken Fowler whose epic 'YODARE' challenge to sail around all the islands in England and Wales in a small, single-handed dinghy was completed last month. And we looked out for his safety along the way. There's still time to support him by visiting 'YODARE' Massive thank you"I'd just like to say a massive thank you to all the wonderful National Coastwatch volunteers at so many stations who have looked out for my safety as I sailed around the coasts. "Knowing you were there was just so reassuring, as an extra monitoring service on the VHF radio and it was super useful to have access to the local area conditions," said Ken. Our watchkeepers have some incredible views. NCI Wooltack Point overlooks the notorious Jack Sound. Credit Ken Fowler "Whether you're on an epic adventure or just heading out for relaxing day on the water on any type of vessel, I'd recommend you check in with your nearest NCI station as part of your preparations. They're a really knowledgeable bunch of amazing volunteers and it's great to know that someone else has your back," he added. What is NCI?National Coastwatch is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers – all of whom give up their time freely to help protect and preserve life at sea and around the coast. The Charity is completely self-funded and relies on generous public support and corporate sponsorship to continue its work. It is also part of the maritime search and rescue community reporting to HM Coastguard, with stations holding Declared Facility Status. The watchkeepers monitor yachts and sea-going traffic. If they see anything that doesn't look right, they alert HM Coastguard. Our aim is to keep you and the maritime community safe – and we're grateful for any support you can give.
