In today's newsletter we explore an important question for us Indians:
Can India build an AI like ChatGPT?
For us to get to this answer, we must first ask - “Why is building an AI like ChatGPT a tough task?”
Here are some thoughts!
Imagine building an AI like ChatGPT or Bard as creating a Bollywood blockbuster movie! You need a star-studded cast, a colossal budget, and a captivating script.
1. The Stars of AI : Just like a film needs talented actors, creating an AI needs brilliant minds. OpenAI has around 400 individuals, many of whom are engineers with years, even decades, of experience in Machine Learning, Neural Networks, and similar AI fields.

2. The Script of Data : Think of the data as the script. GPT3 was trained on around 570GB of text data, equivalent to about 300 billion words! GPT4 is expected to be even larger. This is like creating a script that's much longer than any movie script in the world!

3. The Editing Suite : Just like a film goes through several edits before it's released, AI undergoes further training and feedback. OpenAI employs thousands of people from Africa and India to feed and refine the data for ChatGPT, improving its responses.

4. The Big Budget : It's no secret that making a blockbuster movie requires a huge budget. Similarly, OpenAI spent about $550 million in 2022 alone and has already raised more than $10 billion. To put it in perspective, the total amount raised by all Indian startups in 2022 was $25 billion.

5. The Cinematic Technology : Just like a film needs high-tech equipment, AI requires immense computational power. OpenAI spends between $500k-$1million daily just on computing costs.

So, can we in India make it happen?
If we can manage all the above, the answer is a resounding yes!
However, it's a mammoth task, and by the time we get there, ChatGPT and Bard might have become even smarter.
So, a smarter idea for us would be to focus on solutions unique to India, using training data only we have access to.
Do you have any such uniquely Indian ideas? 😉
