OpenAI Just Killed Thousands of Startups

Enterprises are finally getting what they have been waiting for – a private and exclusive ChatGPT that only they get to use and nobody else, not even OpenAI. But, unfortunately, this is not such a good news for downstream startups as ChatGPT Enterprise officially marks the end of “fine-tuning for your own data” type of companies.

A lot of companies, particularly B2B thin wrapper startups, which were selling enterprise lines of products, thriving on OpenAI’s data privacy flaws, and raising millions in funding, are in grave danger. They now need to look for an alternative moat or be considered dead.

Throwing light on ChatGPT Enterprise, NVIDIA researcher Jim Fan said: “Finally addresses the data privacy (“no training” commitment) and security issues. Extra goodies are long context (32), 2x faster inference, and Code Interpreter.” He also said that the App Store would be next – “custom app integration with specific enterprise use.”

Simply put, businesses can now own and control their data. OpenAI said that it does not train on business data or conversations. Also, it said that ChatGPT Enterprise is SOC 2 compliant, and all conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. Its new admin console lets enterprise customers manage team members easily and offers domain verification, single sign-on (SSO), and usage insights, allowing for large-scale deployment and more.

Over the past few days, OpenAI has been trying really hard to woo enterprise customers. Looks like ChatGPT Enterprise is an outcome of all of its efforts. In May 2023, when OpenAI released the Data Control feature to ChatGPT Plus users, it also announced plans to launch ChatGPT Business, and it has finally made it happen in a span of four months.

OpenAI said that in just nine months of its launch, ChatGPT has seen teams adopt it in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. Some of the early users of ChatGPT Enterprise include Block, Canva, Carlyle, PwC, Zapier and Estée Lauder Companies. All of these companies are using it to craft clearer communications, accelerate coding tasks, rapidly explore answers to complex business questions, assist with creative work, and much more.

Llamas Love to Fight

A few days ago, fine-tuned Code Llama-based models WizardCoder 34B by Wizard LM and Phind were released. Currently, both of them are engaged in a heated argument over whether Phind used Wizard LM’s WizardCoder-style dataset to train their V1 model to beat GPT-4 on HumanEval. However, Phind dismissed the claims, but the debate is still on!

OpenAI Controls Open Source

Ever since the release of LLaMA, Meta has been touted as the open-source champion. Now, with Llama 2 and Code Llama, the praise for the company from the developer ecosystem has been at an all-time high. Ironically, every model in the open source ecosystem compares itself against GPT’s capabilities, and on the HumanEval benchmark, which has been created by OpenAI itself.

Even if Meta decides to release an open-source Llama 3, which would be on par with GPT-4 in terms of capabilities, it would still be measured on HumanEval. Who knows? By the time that happens, OpenAI might have already released GPT-5 and created another evaluation benchmark for open-source models. There is no way for open source to escape this.
