There was a lull in the cloud gaming market after Google shut down Stadia early this year. At last, about 10 months later, there is some new development in space. Last week, Sony announced the acquisition of iSIZE, a UK-based deep-learning video delivery platform.

Sony explained that the acquisition will help Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) with significant expertise in applying machine learning to video processing.

iSIZE has built its expertise in developing photorealistic neural avatars. Its focus extends to both 2D and 3D modelling, particularly for applications within the gaming and metaverse realms. This strategic emphasis strongly indicates the company's commitment to advancing its cloud gaming endeavours.

The development comes a few months after Jim Ryan, Sony CEO, said, “There’s been lots of attention around cloud gaming. We observe mobility in gaming habits to be an increasingly important trend. The cloud will be fundamental to allowing us or anyone else to exploit that trend of mobility.”

Microsoft's recent $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard has further upped the competition in the space. Sony's acquisition of iSIZE is perceived as a strategic move in response to this intense competition.

Not just globally, the cloud gaming segment is heating up in India too. In a leaked Xbox internal document, it was revealed that Reliance Jio had been seeking a partnership with Microsoft in the cloud gaming space in 2020. Microsoft has been working with Jio to bring Project xCloud into the Indian market since then.

Subsequently, Reliance attempted to forge a partnership with NVIDIA for its GeForce Now cloud gaming service in November 2022. However, the partnership could not materialise as planned, and Jio sought collaborations with smaller cloud providers like Ubitus K.K., leading to the launch of JioGamesCloud. With its extensive user base, Jio has the potential to make a significant impact in the cloud gaming market.

NVIDIA Builds Chip Using Trained Chips

NVIDIA first built the chip and is now using those LLM-trained chips to optimise its architecture, design and cost. NVIDIA has found the true use case of LLM through ‘ChipNeMo’. A 43-billion-parameter LLM, ChipNeMo is aimed at assisting chip designers with various tasks, such as answering design-related questions, summarising bug documentation, and generating scripts for Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools.

This specialised LLM was trained on NVIDIA’s internal data, enabling it to enhance designer productivity. While initially for internal use, it holds potential for EDA tool vendors to create more user-friendly interfaces for chip design, offering "superpowers" to designers throughout the design process.

Top talents from major tech companies are leaving to launch their own AI startups – and with rapid success. Pioneers from Google, OpenAI, Meta, and others are capitalising on the AI boom, creating billion-dollar companies within a year.

Kai-Fu Lee's 01.AI, launched just eight months ago, has reached a $1 billion valuation. Lee's company has open-sourced the Yi-34B LLM, surpassing the industry-standard Llama 2. Big-tech layoffs are accelerating this trend, with former employees seeking to build AI-focused startups, achieving significant success.

Vinod Khosla, a prominent venture capitalist, notes the increasing passion for innovation and dissatisfaction with big-tech's pace. These startups are also providing employment to laid-off tech workers.
