Challenging times loom for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud as companies like Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, and giants such as Adani, Tata, Reliance, and now Lenovo, are aggressively expanding hyperscale capacity in the country. This growth is supported by government initiatives, alongside evolving data security regulations.

All these developments mirror Jio's democratisation of the telecom sector, positioning India to lead the global hyperscale and AI landscape.

According to a report by Synergy Research Group, the capacity for hyperscale data centres will almost triple in six years. India, too, is witnessing a growth in the hyperscale landscape. Yotta Data Services, which is a part of the Hiranandani Group, plans to install 16,384 GPUs by mid-2024 and 32,768 GPUs by the end of 2025. Older players, like the NSE-listed E2E Networks, have also been extending their footprint in the country.

Moreover, heavyweights like Adani, Tata and Reliance too are swiftly moving ahead in this space. Last year, Tata Communications entered into a partnership with NVIDIA, the largest GPU maker, to develop a hyperscale infrastructure. Reliance and Adani, too, are rapidly expanding their presence in the data centre space.

Lenovo, acting as a data centre enabler, is planning to bolster its business in India via a revised PLI scheme for IT hardware in an attempt to overthrow cloud majors. “We actually partnered with the Indian-based Next Wave cloud service providers,” said Amit Luthra – MD India – Lenovo ISG, in an exclusive interview with AIM, sharing its commitment to local production.

The market in itself is growing rapidly, presenting an opportunity for a new hyperscaler to emerge from India. However, the hyperscale market is still dominated by the big three – AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud – holding over 60% market share.

This could change significantly in the coming years. Read the full story here.
