Fun AI game to challenge your visual prowess.   Let’s go! 🔦 Last Week In AI🔦 Ilya Raises $1B For His Startup  Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a new AI startup co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has raised $1 billion in funding to develop safe AI systems that surpass human intelligence.   The details:   SSI aims to create superintelligent AI systems with a strong focus on safety and addressing potential existential risks. The company plans to spend years on R&D before bringing any product to market. Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy founded SSI about three months ago. The company is now valued at $5 billion. With only 10 employees currently, SSI plans to use the funds to acquire computing power and expand its team, focusing on building a small, highly trusted group of researchers and engineers. Major investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, SV Angel, and NFDG (a partnership run by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross).   Why it matters?   This unprecedented $1 billion seed round for a three-month-old startup highlights the significant interest in AI safety and the potential of SSI's approach. Sutskever's departure from OpenAI and his new focus on addressing AI safety concerns have clearly resonated with investors.  Alibaba's AI Model Beats GPT-4o Alibaba just unveiled Qwen2-VL, a new vision-language AI model that outperforms GPT-4o in several benchmarks — particularly excelling in document comprehension and multilingual text in image understanding.   Key highlights:   Qwen2-VL demonstrates advanced visual analysis capabilities, processing images of various resolutions and aspect ratios, as well as videos over 20 minutes long.  The model excels in complex cognitive tasks, handling college-level problem-solving, mathematical reasoning through chart analysis, and superior document analysis, often outperforming even some closed-source models. It offers extensive multilingual support, understanding text in images across a wide range of languages including most European languages, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Vietnamese. Qwen2-VL comes in three variants: the high-performance 72B model (to be released later via API), and the open-sourced 7B and 2B models under Apache 2.0 license. The 2B model is optimized for potential mobile deployment. The model boasts strong integration capabilities for real-world applications, allowing incorporation into mobile phones, robots, and other devices. It supports automated operations based on visual inputs and enables function calling for third-party software integration,   Why it matters?   Qwen2-VL represents a significant advancement in AI capabilities from China. Its could be a powerful tool for diverse applications, potentially shifting the geopolitical landscape of AI competition and innovation. OpenAI To Raise $100B OpenAI is reportedly in talks to raise a new funding round at a valuation exceeding $100 billion, led by Thrive Capital, with Microsoft also expected to participate.   The details:   The potential valuation of over $100 billion would be a significant increase from OpenAI's previous valuation, which was reported to be around $80-86 billion. Thrive Capital is expected to lead the round with an investment of approximately $1 billion. OpenAI's annualized revenue has shown substantial growth, reportedly surpassing $3.4 billion earlier this year, up from $2 billion in previous reports. Despite the revenue growth, the company is projected to face significant losses, with estimates suggesting nearly $5 billion in losses by the end of the year. OpenAI has invested heavily in AI development, reportedly spending $8.5 billion on AI training and staffing.   Why it matters?   The massive funding round at such a high valuation would demonstrate continued investor confidence in OpenAI's potential, despite its current financial losses. This could be a strong rebuttal to critics who have questioned the company's sustainability.
