Today, your curious AI Human, Amit Raja Naik, will tell you everything about the powerful amalgamation of AI and quantum computing—a combination that experts call “lethal”, no less!

Recently, Ajai Chowdhry, chairman of the Mission Governing Board of India’s National Quantum Mission, popularly known as The Father of Indian Hardware, shared his insights on this transformative blend of AI and quantum with AIM.

Chowdhry described AI as the driving force for quantum computing applications, emphasising its potential to revolutionise areas like drug discovery and cybersecurity. He believes this synergy could unlock unprecedented possibilities but also poses significant risks.

Big Tech’s Quantum Push

Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and IBM are leading the charge in combining AI and quantum computing to tackle some of the world’s most complex problems.

For example, Google’s Quantum AI initiative leverages its Sycamore processor to simulate chemical reactions, significantly accelerating the drug discovery process. The integration of quantum algorithms with AI tools, such as future versions of AlphaFold, could open new frontiers in understanding protein structures, transforming the pharmaceutical landscape.

The Cybersecurity Dilemma

Cybersecurity is another area where this combination is making waves. Quantum computing has the potential to disrupt traditional encryption methods, leaving financial and security systems vulnerable. Chowdhry warned that in just four to six years, powerful quantum computers could crack widely used encryption standards like RSA and AES.

However, companies like QNu Labs are already developing quantum-safe cryptographic solutions, using AI to fortify secure communications and safeguard data against quantum threats. Notably, recent reports from Chinese researchers indicate successful attacks on encryption algorithms using quantum computers, highlighting the urgency of preparing for this shift.

Breakthroughs in Error Correction

In parallel, breakthroughs in error correction and fault tolerance are paving the way for more reliable quantum systems. DeepMind’s AlphaQubit, an AI error decoding system, has set new benchmarks in quantum reliability by identifying and correcting errors with remarkable accuracy.

Similarly, Microsoft’s partnership with Atom Computing has resulted in a quantum system with 24 logical qubits, marking significant progress toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.

India, too, is making strides in quantum computing through its National Quantum Mission, which provides startup funding of up to INR 25 crore—a significant leap from traditional grants. Chowdhry highlighted the importance of collaboration between startups, research institutions, and educational bodies to strengthen the quantum ecosystem.

While acknowledging that India lags slightly behind global leaders, he noted that most nations trail far behind, with only five to seven truly ahead in this domain.

AI PoCs are a Waste of Money

Critics are raising eyebrows, and for good reason. Vin Vashishta, AI advisor and author of From Data to Profit, pulled no punches when he said: “What’s the point of an AI PoC other than to make consulting companies rich? PoCs don’t deliver revenue, can’t scale in production, and their value is 0.”

So, are PoCs really worth the time, effort, and cost—or just another case of tech chasing its own tail? Read to find out.
