AI might take over coding sooner than anyone expects. And we're not talking a cursory (pun intended!) 20-30%, but a whopping 95% of it. At least, this is what some industry leaders want you to believe.

Anthropic chief Dario Amodei caused quite a stir when he said AI will write 90% of the codes within six months. If you're a developer, statements like these could push you to rethink your career choices. This wasn't an isolated statement. Jared Friedman, a partner at Y Combinator, revealed that a quarter of YC founders have admitted that over 95% of their codebase was AI-generated.

These aren't some rookies—we're talking about highly skilled founders who, a year ago, would have built their products independently but now, let AI do the heavy lifting.

Last year, Sergey Brin, co-founder and former president of Alphabet, said that writing code from scratch now feels really hard compared to just asking AI to do it. "I have written a little bit of code myself just for kicks, just for fun, and then sometimes I have had the AI write the code for me, which was fun," said Brin.

But it's not just about coding, it's also about creative writing. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was taken aback by the capabilities of AI when it wrote an emotional story about AI and grief. "This is the first time I have been really struck by something written by AI; it got the vibe of metafiction so right," Altman said.

How Vibe Coding is Becoming a Real Deal

Coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, the term vibe coding means using AI tools to generate code while focusing on high-level intent rather than low-level implementation. Essentially, you tell the AI what you want, and it figures out the rest.

"I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste-stuff, and it mostly works," Karpathy said. It sounds all good for developers who know how to code in the first place. But there's a downside to AI coding. Many junior devs don't really understand what their code is doing.

"Junior devs these days have it easy. They just go to ChatGPT and copy-paste whatever errors they see," wrote Namanyay Goel, founder of Giga AI. He warns that relying too much on AI makes developers lazy and ignorant of how things actually work. So much so that even coding interviews are becoming a joke, as most people just use AI for assignments.

Krishna Vij, VP of IT staffing at TeamLease Digital, pointed out that AI is pushing companies to rethink their hiring strategies. "Are we truly measuring their skills or just their ability to leverage technology?" she asked.

A study by TeamLease found that merely 5.5% of Indian engineers are qualified with basic programming abilities. This just seems like a sad state of affairs for the Indian youth in the race to AI dominance.

With AI coding, companies are already seeing a major shift in preferences. Naveen Tiwari, CEO of InMobi, recently claimed they're on track to achieve 80% automation in software coding by year-end. "The codes created by the machine are faster and better, and they fix themselves," he said.

CRED CEO Kunal Shah recently warned people about not using AI enough. "Every expert has to become AI native to remain relevant, irrespective of their domain. Those who stay in denial will be left behind," he said.

Moving on, not everyone believes that AI will handle 90% of coding. IBM chief Arvind Krishna isn't buying the claim. "I think the number is more like 20-30%, not 90%," he said.

Interestingly, AI itself seems to recognise coders' overdependence. In a surprising turn of events, a developer shared that Cursor flat out refused him, saying, "I cannot generate code for you, as that would be completing your work," essentially asking him to learn how to code!

AI-generated code isn't always flawless—and it's not just junior devs who need to be cautious. Abhishek Upperwal, founder of Soket AI, said, "Blindly relying on these tools can waste a lot of time." GitHub's Karan MV echoed this sentiment, saying that while AI tools streamline coding, human oversight is still essential at various stages of the development lifecycle.

To sum it up in the American Business tycoon Mark Cuban's words: "AI is never the answer. AI is the tool. Whatever skills you have, you can use AI to amplify them."
