"Are we truly measuring their skills or just their ability to leverage technology?" she asked. A study by TeamLease found that merely 5.5% of Indian engineers are qualified with basic programming abilities. This just seems like a sad state of affairs for the Indian youth in the race to AI dominance. With AI coding, companies are already seeing a major shift in preferences. Naveen Tiwari, CEO of InMobi, recently claimed they're on track to achieve 80% automation in software coding by year-end. "The codes created by the machine are faster and better, and they fix themselves," he said. CRED CEO Kunal Shah recently warned people about not using AI enough. "Every expert has to become AI native to remain relevant, irrespective of their domain. Those who stay in denial will be left behind," he said. Moving on, not everyone believes that AI will handle 90% of coding. IBM chief Arvind Krishna isn't buying the claim. "I think the number is more like 20-30%, not 90%," he said. Interestingly, AI itself seems to recognise coders' overdependence. In a surprising turn of events, a developer shared that Cursor flat out refused him, saying, "I cannot generate code for you, as that would be completing your work," essentially asking him to learn how to code! AI-generated code isn't always flawless—and it's not just junior devs who need to be cautious. Abhishek Upperwal, founder of Soket AI, said, "Blindly relying on these tools can waste a lot of time." GitHub's Karan MV echoed this sentiment, saying that while AI tools streamline coding, human oversight is still essential at various stages of the development lifecycle.
