Let’s go!  Last Week In AI   Microsoft’s New AI Is Better Than Doctors Microsoft claims it has taken a significant step toward achieving 'medical superintelligence.' The company reports that its new AI system can dramatically improve the accuracy of complex medical diagnoses, claiming a 300% increase in accuracy over human doctors, especially when used with OpenAI’s advanced reasoning model, o3. Details: Microsoft tested the AI system on 304 extremely challenging medical cases previously featured in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The system worked by first generating initial guesses based on patient information and then using another AI agent to search for and analyze additional data like blood tests or X-rays to refine its diagnosis. Using this layered approach, the AI system was able to correctly identify the diagnosis in about 80% of the difficult cases, compared to an accuracy rate of just 20% for a panel of human doctors. Microsoft AI CEO stated that based on this progress, he believes these systems could become 'almost error-free' in diagnosing conditions within the next 5-10 years. Their massive goal? To build an AI that's as smart as or even smarter than humans across many different tasks, aiming for something called AGI. Technical Context: Meta is putting all its AI projects, like the Llama AI models, FAIR research, and product teams, under this new MSL group. Zuckerberg himself will oversee it. Meta is hiring the best AI experts from places like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, offering huge signing bonuses, some reportedly up to $100 million! The company plans to spend a massive [$65 billion] this year to build the powerful computer systems necessary for this next level of AI. Top AI pros have joined, including people who worked on popular models like GPT-4o and Gemini, forming a team led by former CEOs of Scale AI and GitHub. Why It Matters: Meta is investing a ton of money and hiring the best people to win the race for AGI. Zuckerberg is making a big bet that Meta can be the first to create a super-smart AI that could change everything. But spending this much and having a goal of 2025 means there's a lot on the line.
