Something big is happening across India's tech map. In the span of just a few days, Google, TCS and Foxconn have announced multi-billion-dollar investments that could reshape how India builds and runs its digital and industrial backbone.

Google has officially gone mega in India. The tech giant said it will spend $15 billion to build a one-gigawatt AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh—its biggest such centre outside the US. The facility, developed with AdaniConneX and Airtel, will anchor India's east coast as a significant AI infrastructure hub.

Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud's CEO, called it "the largest AI hub Google is investing in outside the US". Earlier, state officials thought Google was coming in with a $10 billion investment, but Google has clearly gone bigger.

Once complete, the campus will join Google's network of AI data centres in 12 countries and power everything from Search to YouTube. It will also support Indian firms building AI products by giving them access to high-performance, low-latency computing infrastructure—something the country has long been short of.

Gautam Adani said the facility would "house the TPU and GPU-based compute power required for deep learning, neural network training and large-scale AI model inference". In other words, serious AI muscle.

There's more. Google will build an international subsea gateway with multiple cable landings on the eastern coast, co-developed with Airtel. It's meant to reduce dependence on Mumbai and Chennai, making Visakhapatnam a new global connectivity point.

Not Just Google

Earlier this month, TCS signalled it doesn't want to be left behind. Its Q2 numbers were weak, but CEO K Krithivasan used the occasion to announce a $6 billion plan to build its own AI data centres over the next few years. Each 150 MW block will cost around $1 billion.

Krithivasan said these centres will serve "pure play AI providers, deep tech companies, hyperscalers and government needs". For a company that has spent decades selling software and services, this is a massive infrastructure pivot.

And it's not just IT services making moves, with global giants and Indian IT pouring billions into digital infrastructure. On the hardware front, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn announced a ₹15,000 crore investment in Tamil Nadu and plans to hire 14,000 engineers.

The state industries minister, TRB Rajaa, called it the "largest ever engineering jobs commitment" in the state. Foxconn already produces iPhones in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, but this move expands its reach into value-added manufacturing and AI-led R&D.

India's data centre map is redrawing fast. The next wave of AI and cloud will be built not just in Silicon Valley, but along India's coastlines and cities that, until recently, weren't even on the global map.
