Growth Meets DisruptionHere's where things get interesting. India's GCC ecosystem is expected to add over a lakh jobs this year, while automation is simultaneously set to eliminate thousands of roles. At first glance, that may sound contradictory. But it is not. What we're witnessing is a replacement cycle, rather than a reduction cycle. Low-skill, repeatable roles are declining, while high-skill, AI-adjacent roles are expanding rapidly. This is not just job loss; it's a transformation. GCCs have long been misunderstood, but reframing this shift as a 'job mutation' highlights how they're evolving to meet the dynamic demands of the market and integrate innovative technologies. GCCs have evolved from back offices and cost centres into vital components of innovation. They are no longer merely supporting global teams. They are the global teams. The surge in salaries is simply a reflection of this structural shift. The Talent Paradox Higher salaries, however, don't mean easier hiring. In fact, the opposite is true. There's a growing mismatch between employee expectations and what companies are willing to pay at scale. While GCCs are willing to pay top-tier compensation for the right skills, they remain equally unwilling to inflate salaries across the board. This has created a stark divide within the workforce. A small segment of high earners is thriving, while a larger group experiences slower growth—highlighting growing inequality. If this sounds familiar, it is because mature tech markets behave this way, and India is moving in that direction. For a long time, startups had an edge. They offered ESOP upside, faster growth and greater ownership. Today, GCCs are offering attractive advantages, including comparable salaries, greater stability, and opportunities to tackle global-scale challenges. For many engineers, that's a powerful trade-off. The default career decision is no longer obvious. And that's new. If you read this like a salary story, the larger point is missed. This is not about ₹18 LPA vs ₹16 LPA. This is about who ultimately controls India's top talent. |
