Let’s see what OpenAI’s got at the moment besides heat from competitorsmounting losses, declining users, and piling lawsuits, among other setbacks. If the situation persists, there are chances of the company filing bankruptcy pretty soon.

In July this year, the ChatGPT website saw a user decline of 12% month on month, hitting 1.5 billion from 1.7 billion users in June, as reported by SimilarWeb

It doesn’t end there. OpenAI’s losses doubled to around $540 million last year, which can be loosely attributed to ChatGPT’s development and the hiring of top tech talent from world over. Not to forget, the cost of running ChatGPT is around $700,000 a day!

Then there’s the ever-increasing competition in the space. Most notably, Elon Musk’s xAI, looking to build TruthGPT, which according to him would be a rival to ChatGPT that a lot of people are eagerly awaiting.

The woes don’t end there. Piling lawsuits are aggravating OpenAI’s anxieties. Many authors have recently filed a lawsuit against the company for unlawfully ‘ingesting’ their books without their permission. OpenAI seems to not care much, but the lawyers’ fees are sure to be exorbitant.

Lastly, the gossip of the Valley, as Andrej Karpathy puts it, is about acquiring GPUs for building AI models. Right now, there is a shortage, and even OpenAI is struggling with it. Faced with these challenges and more, will the company be able to sustain itself for long? Read to find out.

AI Superchip Showdown Begins

NVIDIA  recently announced its latest innovation, the next-generation NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper platform. The new setup is a game-changer, offering 3.5 times more memory capacity and 3 times more bandwidth than the current version. It is expected to deliver this new AI chip by the second quarter of 2024.

But is it better than AMD M1300X, which is expected to be released later this year, alongside Intel’s Gaudi2? Read to find out.

India’s Hidden Semiconductor Fab

At a time when India is striving to invite foreign companies to come and make computer chips here, it is worrying that people hadn’t paid attention to the special chip factory in Mohali, Punjab, called the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL), until lately.

Established in 1983, SCL was created to help make important parts for gadgets like phones and computers, but not many people noticed it. This company even made chips for Mangalyaan. Anshuman Tripathi, a member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) said, "SCL is special because it's one of the very few factories that made chips for going to the Moon and Mars!"

Turning Rural India into Data Mining Hub

TIME recently did a brilliant piece on how the Indian rural market is contributing to the development of AI systems, such as ChatGPT and alike, where it not only highlighted the rising demand for training datasets in one’s native language but emphasised the need for more inclusive solutions. In the pursuit of finding out more about this approach, we were led to Bangalore-based Karya, a nonprofit organisation working towards accelerating social mobility in the country.
