Nivedan here again!   What a year it has been for Artificial Intelligence!   As 2023 comes to a close, it's remarkable to look back on the insane progress that was made in AI over the past 12 months.  There were so many groundbreaking developments that it was hard to keep up. Many of the innovations seemed straight out of a sci-fi movie just a short time ago. Though it's impossible to cover the sheer volume of announcements and achievements in one go, I wanted to highlight 10 monumental AI milestones from 2023 in this year's final edition.   (read time: 4 mins) This one image captures the sentiment of AI progress best from Midjourney V1.0 launched in March 2022 to V6.0 in Dec 2023. The prompt used is the exact same for all - “young indian girl child”🤯 Jan: Microsoft Bets $10B on OpenAI   Microsoft went all in on OpenAI, the hottest AI startup around, with a $10 billion investment. This gave Microsoft access to deploy OpenAI's cutting-edge models like GPT-3 in its own products and services. It was a strategic play to gain an edge over rivals like Google in the blockbuster AI arms race.   Feb: Microsoft Powers Bing with GPT-4   Microsoft launched Bing Chat powered by OpenAI's powerful new GPT-4 model. This catapulted Bing's users to over 100 million, cementing its spot as the #2 search engine behind Google.   Mar: OpenAI Unleashes Revolutionary GPT-4   OpenAI finally unveiled GPT-4, which handled both text and image inputs. It massively improved performance on tests like the LSAT, SAT, and Bar exam per OpenAI's benchmarks. GPT-4 represented the biggest leap in AI capabilities yet, setting a new bar for large language models.   Apr: HeyGen launches hyperreal avatar generation HeyGen's AI can generate customizable, photorealistic virtual avatars from simple text prompts. Users can create avatars that look just like them or invent completely new digital personas. HeyGen avatars mimic human appearance and motions with unprecedented realism. Jun: Midjourney's V5 Sets New Standard for AI Realism   Midjourney released its photorealistic image generator V5, cranking out images so realistic they look like photographs. V5 set a new standard for AI image realism that blew its predecessor away.   Jul: Adobe Surprises Everyone with Firefly   Adobe entered the AI race with Firefly, which creates original images for commercial use without copyright issues. Though slow to take off at first, Firefly marked Adobe's foray into AI image generation.   Sep: Runway's Gen-2 Revolutionizes Text-to-Video   Runway's text-to-video Gen-2 let users create videos from scratch with one sentence. Gen-2 kicked open the floodgates for high-quality text-to-video capabilities.   Oct: Anthropic's Claude 2 Leaves Rivals in the Dust   Anthropic released Claude 2, which uses a 100k token context window to summarize long PDFs better than ChatGPT. Many ditched ChatGPT for Claude after its beastly upgrade.   Nov: OpenAI Supercharges ChatGPT with New Skills   OpenAI added voice and image abilities to ChatGPT. This unlocked new use cases like asking how to fix a bike by showing ChatGPT a photo.   21-Dec: Midjourney V6 Pushes AI Art to New Heights   Midjourney unveiled V6 of its AI art generator, packing major improvements like text generation and sharper 2x upscaled images. V6 also boasts superior prompt precision and comprehension over past versions. It gives users more artistic arguments to dictate style and aesthetics. The Year That Was   2023 was a banner year for artificial intelligence, with remarkable leaps across natural language processing, computer vision, and multimodal AI.   As we look ahead to 2024 and beyond, the possibilities seem endless. If AI systems can achieve so much in such a short span already, one can only imagine what the coming years have in store. The future is bright for leveraging these technologies to benefit people across industries and domains.   The AI community deserves immense credit for the difficult work and vision that is making this exciting future a reality.
