Relax, you're still part of our valued readership! But imagine if you were among the thousands facing layoffs due to workforce automation and digital transformation. Just like Paytm, which recently let go of nearly 1000 employees from sales, operations, and engineering, replacing them with AI-driven solutions.
The layoffs because of AI is not new, it certainly is a growing trend and is most likely to continue in 2024. Paytm is doing it to transition itself into ‘a complete AI company,’ as revealed by its chief Vijay Shekhar Sharma at the FY24 Q2 earnings call in October 2023. He showcased this shift by presenting an AI-generated animation at the beginning of the event.
Sharma is going all in on AI by announcing several partnerships, alongside launching a $3.6 million fund for investing in AI and electric vehicles.
At the recent GPAI Summit as well Sharma said that India should develop its own AI solutions instead of relying on Western products, hinting at building a tech stack similar to Ola Krutrim, which is already working on India’s first full-stack AI solution.
The layoffs also come against the backdrop of Paytm recently partnering with Amadeus to bring AI solutions to its travel platform and optimising travel experience. This is also probably one of the hints that the company was looking to automate most of its customer-facing work. It is interesting to note that Amadeus uses IBM’s Watson platform for its generative AI tools and hybrid cloud.

ChatGPT Plugins Dilemma
AIM saw this coming miles away when GPTs were launched by OpenAI, where we predicted that this was the first step towards the end of ChatGPT Plugins. And it indeed was. OpenAI has now officially sent a mail to all the plugin developers that they might soon support plugins, and the developers can now shift to building GPTs, which the company claims are similar in process. But the developers are not smiling. Enjoy the full story here.
OpenAI’s Alter Ego
A few months back AIM published a story, Is This the End of LangChain when OpenAI released a new function calling API update. But, we were dead wrong, the company is going all in on mirroring every new development and update that OpenAI releases, and sometimes even better and sometimes worse.
Ironically, LangChain is not only limited to OpenAI’s updates on ChatGPT but also extended its support to other LLMs like Cohere, Anthropic, and a diverse array of models on Hugging Face. Recently, they also released updates for Gemini and Mistral.
