Hey there! Today, your AI Human, Amit Raja Naik, will track the high-stakes race for artificial general intelligence (AGI) and tell you precisely what the next few months hold for the future of AI dominance.

The mad scramble to achieve AGI is hitting unprecedented levels. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently highlighted that the leaders of the generative AI revolution will begin to emerge within the next six to 12 months.

“The winners in the generative revolution—code, videos, text, everything—are being determined in the next six to 12 months,” said Schmidt. He said the growth rate is quadrupling every six months, creating a critical window where only the fastest innovators will stay ahead.

The AGI Race Begins

“Who doesn’t want to be the first on that mountain?” said NVIDIA chief Jensen Huang, capturing the essence of the AGI race.

Huang pointed out the fierce competition among giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, underscoring that scaling laws and massive computational advances are pivotal for AGI development.

“We’re close to AGI…but even if we could argue about whether it is really general intelligence, just getting close to it is going to be a miracle…Nothing is impossible,” Huang added on the No Priors podcast.

Who’s Leading the Race?

OpenAI: The company is pushing the envelope with its Strawberry (o1) model, which sets up a recursive improvement cycle, where each GPT version (GPT-5, GPT-6) will be trained on higher-quality synthetic data generated by the previous model. OpenAI chief Sam Altman remained bullish, declaring, “There is no wall,” while former co-founder Ilya Sutskever emphasised strategic scaling. “Scaling the right thing matters more now than ever.”

Meta: Under the leadership of Yann LeCun, Meta is advancing autonomous machine intelligence (AMI) with projects like Layer Skip and V-JEPA. These initiatives focus on enhancing reasoning and adaptability, striving to create human-aligned AI systems. Meta’s commitment to developing world models and integrating self-supervised learning with tools like the Self-Taught Evaluator showcases its dedication to pushing beyond traditional LLM limitations.

Anthropic: CEO Dario Amodei is navigating Anthropic through an innovative territory by experimenting with dictionary learning and unique scaling methods to overcome LLM limitations. “Even if there’s no problem with data, as we start to scale models up, they just stop getting better,” said Amodei.

Google DeepMind: The company is blending scaling with architectural innovation, investing in multimodal and neuro-symbolic AI to prevent performance plateaus. CEO Demis Hassabis insists on the necessity of new algorithms. “Half our efforts have to do with inventing the next architectures and the next algorithms.”

Despite some underperformance, its Gemini series continues to push the envelope with RL agents and real-world simulations to enhance complex system understanding.

xAI: The company is ambitiously developing Grok 3 to surpass current AI models with rigorous truth-seeking systems free from ideological biases.

Musk predicts a narrow competitive window. “If xAI is first, the others won’t be far behind—maybe six months to a year.” xAI has also built Colossus, the world’s largest AI supercomputer, in just 122 days, showcasing its rapid development capabilities, hinting at AGI’s arrival sometime in the new year or 2026

Musk’s new role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Trump’s administration could further accelerate AI advancements.

Apple: Apple is quietly advancing its AI initiatives under ‘Apple Intelligence’, focusing on making devices smarter while ensuring privacy through private cloud compute. Pedro Domingos aptly summarised it when he said AGI for Apple means “Apple Giving up on Intelligence.” Apple’s efforts to integrate intelligence into its devices while maintaining privacy highlight a unique approach in the AGI race.
