Assumptions about AI models are being challenged near and far. Chinese startup DeepSeek's new R1 model, developed for a fraction of Silicon Valley's usual outlay, is giving tech titans the willies—introduce yourself to R1 on GitHub and find out why. In the same spirit of thrift, Berkeley has released an open source reasoning model that it trained for $450. In security, another good reason to skirt sponsored ads on Google: Phishers may be pulling the strings. And beware of coldhearted Codefinger data-encrypting ransomware.
