Hey there! What's with the obsession with 'deep' research? Google has, well, Deep Research and DeepMind, China has DeepSeek, and now OpenAI has launched 'deep research'. Your AI Memelord, Mohit Pandey, will unravel the deep mystery with a deep dive into this phenomenon.

When China's DeepSeek took the world by storm, OpenAI had to dive deep into research to develop a competitive tool. That's what it did. In a live session, an OpenAI research team announced the launch of an agent that can automatically do some really in-depth research for you. They call it deep research.

When using an optimised version of OpenAI's upcoming o3 model, select deep research in ChatGPT's input tab. This will give you specialised answers using web browsing and data analysis. The tool can interpret and synthesise information from text, images, and PDFs, adjusting its approach based on newly discovered insights.

During the live stream and feature demo, a cheeky ChatGPT message appeared on the history bar: "Is Deeper Seeker a good name?" OpenAI doesn't miss a chance, does it?

The feature is intended for users in finance, science, policy, and engineering, as well as consumers conducting in-depth research on major purchases.

At the launch, OpenAI chief Sam Altman said, "This is like a superpower—experts on demand! It can use the internet, conduct complex research and reasoning, and give you back a report. It is really good and can do tasks that would take hours or days and cost hundreds of dollars."

Interestingly, OpenAI's tool shares not only the name but also other similarities with Google Deep Research, launched last year. Besides, Perplexity AI also performs the same task when multiple complex questions are asked.

Meanwhile, DeepSeek is everywhere.

DeepSeek's AI assistant has become the most downloaded mobile app worldwide, with India leading the surge in new users, accounting for 15.6% of the total downloads since its launch earlier in January.

This comes in the backdrop of Altman's visit to Tokyo to meet SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, just a few days before his expected visit to India

Meanwhile, while speaking with Altman in Tokyo, Son joked that AI, even as it develops the ability to understand emotions, will not pose a threat to humanity because it does not feed on proteins!
