Are you dusting off those checklists and getting ready to make the most of the coast this summer? Don't forget to add NCI (National Coastwatch) to your 'must check' list. The maritime charity's 2,800-pus volunteers keep a daily look out for your safety at sea and along the coast. They're all on call and at your service, whether you're casting off for a leisurely day out or a more challenging adventure. By making NCI your first port of call on VHF Ch 65, you can make radio checks and access the latest live local information to help make your sail a safe one. What is NCI?NCI is part of the maritime search and rescue community reporting to HM Coastguard, with stations holding Declared Facility Status. The watchkeepers monitor yachts and sea-going traffic. If they see anything that doesn't look right, they alert HM Coastguard. HM Coastguard also asks NCI stations for assistance in spotting, monitoring and providing a bearing on a vessel in difficulties. This helps to get the emergency services to your exact location as quickly as possible – essential if you're in danger. A lifeline for youNational Coastwatch is a very special registered charity run entirely by volunteers – all of whom give the gift of their time and a potential lifeline for you. Funds are always needed for essential equipment such as high-powered optics, station maintenance, for utilities and to expand the network to areas where there are high numbers of incidents.
