Dr ChatGPT & Dr Claude Walked into a Clinic

OpenAI and Anthropic are racing to become the layer between you and your doctor, turning trust, privacy, and clinical accuracy into the real battlefield for AI in healthcare. Google and Apple are in the mix too. Who do you trust more?

On January 13, OpenAI made a move that turned heads. It acquired Torch, a small but highly focused startup designed to pull medical data from hospitals, labs, wearables and consumer health apps into a single unified system. The deal was reportedly worth about $100 million in equity.

All four members of the Torch team are now joining OpenAI to work on ChatGPT Health. Torch was built by Ilya Abyzov and his team after their time at Forward Health, with a sincere belief at its core.

"AI can't help you if your health data is scattered across four hospitals, two labs, seven apps and three web portals," Torch wrote in its blog.

More than 230 million people already ask health and wellness questions on ChatGPT every week. That is over 5% of the platform's global usage. This acquisition turns ChatGPT Health from a feature into an infrastructure play.

ChatGPT Health itself launched on January 7 as a separate health space inside the platform. It comes with purpose-made encryption, strict data isolation and rules that keep health conversations from training OpenAI's foundation models.

OpenAI has been explicit on this point: conversations in Health are not used to train its models.

Jokes aside, doctors who spoke to AIM see value in this. Dr Shashank Goyal from JJM Medical College said ChatGPT Health works well as a screening layer. It helps people understand their daily health parameters and spot changes early.

Rajan Kashyap, professor at NIMHANS, has warned that patient confidentiality is often ignored in Indian healthcare and that data protection should be treated with the seriousness of national security.

The AI Foundry by Tredence in Chennai: A Workshop for Builders of Real-World AI

The AI Foundry hosted by Tredence, in association with AIM, is heading to Chennai. On February 7, senior AI and data science professionals will gather for an invite-only developer workshop focused on one question that matters right now: How to move from experimenting with AI to actually building systems that work in the real world? Click here to register now.

Before diving into Anthropic, Google and Apple, let's look at some interesting developments:

While OpenAI was busy building walls around health data, Anthropic chose a very different route.

Claude for Healthcare launched just days after ChatGPT Health. Unlike OpenAI's sandboxed model, Claude for Healthcare is woven directly into Claude itself. The system can securely access medical and insurance databases to check coverage, explain lab reports and even prepare claims documentation.

It is HIPAA-compliant and connected to scientific databases for biological research.

For hospitals and insurers, Claude functions as a workflow tool. For patients, it acts as a translator of medical complexity.

India, meanwhile, isn't standing still. Fractal's Vaidya.ai is already live in beta as a health advisor app

Considering everything, doctors agree on one thing: AI is great for understanding, not for decisions. It can explain reports, list options and flag risks. What it cannot do, however, is replace clinicians.

Google and Apple Also Step In

Meanwhile, Google has also chimed in at the right time with a renewed focus.

It has updated its open MedGemma model and released MedGemma 1.5 4B with improved medical imaging support. Alongside this, there's also MedASR, its new open medical speech-to-text model.

Though not packaged as an app, Google is also getting serious about healthcare, something it has been doing for a while now.

Meanwhile, Apple is also said to be working on a substantial refresh of its Health app, with multiple new features expected in the iOS 26.4 update. According to a report from 9To5Mac, the update includes calorie tracking and even video-based health services.

In short, AI will be your doctor, but it might make sure they are not drowning in paperwork.

At Xebia, AI is not a pilot or a tool; it is the operating layer of the enterprise. Intelligence is embedded into decisions, workflows and customer experiences, delivering outcomes that matter, according to Anand Sahay, global CEO at Xebia.

"Success is measured in faster innovation, higher productivity, lower costs and real business value at scale. Responsible design, secure systems, and clear governance create trust from day one. Collaboration turns clients into co-builders, not spectators. By training teams, unifying data, and focusing on India-scale problems, Xebia ensures AI evolves with organisations, society, and regulation. This approach delivers measurable impact today while remaining adaptable for tomorrow globally sustainably."
