Google DeepMind (formerly known as DeepMind) has not just given the world breakthrough AI technologies, like AlphaGo, AlphaFold, AlphaDev, AlphaStar, and AlphaCode but has also given birth to AlphaLeader – a new breed of tech entrepreneurs that are solving real-world problems, and are often referred to as Google DeepMind Mafia.

Founded in 2010, DeepMind was started by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, and was later acquired by Google in 2014. Only recently it got rebranded as Google DeepMind. The research lab is popularly known for bringing together world-class AI talent.

Over the last few years alone, close to 200 former DeepMind employees have built their startups in AI, blockchain, life science, climate tech, energy, and others. They have also successfully raised millions of dollars from investors, some have turned into investors, and a few of them are operating in stealth mode.

Some of the notable AI startups include Inflection, Mistral AI, Glyphic AI, and Shift Lab, Common Sense Machines, among others. (see below)

Google DeepMind has over 1,000 employees, almost thrice more than OpenAI. It has produced 30 times more research papers in the past three years with more diversity than OpenAI

The credit goes to its deep-rooted philosophy of collaboration and focused teams working on extremely complex and multidisciplinary projects. "DeepMind is very clear and focused on its mission," said the head of research at Google DeepMind, Pushmeet Kohli, previously, in an exclusive interview with AIM

Catch ‘em Young

DeepMind is on the lookout for young talent in AI. A few months ago, it partnered with Raspberry Pi to help educators teach and promote subjects of AI and machine learning to young minds – catching ‘em young.

The research lab has a history of collaborating with educators, including STEM Learning, The Brilliant Club, Stemettes, British Science Association and Apps for Good. It aims to reach 500 schools (i.e. 10% of UK secondary schools) and over 100,000 young people. It already has initiatives such as fellowship and scholarship programs for postgraduates.

DeepMind is emerging as a test-bed for producing AI leaders and tech entrepreneurs, who are breaking the boundaries of AI and computing and creating a real impact in the world.
