Overall, the Indian IT majors have trained close to seven lakh employees in generative AI, in partnership with companies like Google, Microsoft, Oracle and NVIDIA. However, AIM noted a decline in the total headcount for many IT firms, along with signs of disparity in hiring freshers as they are mostly focusing on training and upskilling their existing employees, besides scaling workflow automation and digital initiatives.
Wipro seems to be leading the race in training its employees for generative AI, followed by TCS and Infosys among others. In terms of product and service adoption, TCS is leading the generative AI conversations with its clients – and no more paying catch-up – followed by Wipro, Infosys and others.
TCS
“We have over 100,000 GenAI-ready employees today, and we are now investing in deepening their expertise further with the exciting new technology,” said TCS’ executive vice president and global head – human resource, Milind Lakkad, at the recent earnings call.
TCS CEO K Krithivasan said that they won six large operating model transformation deals with TCS Cognix at their core, which uses generative AI to a large extent, to enable business outcomes and decision-making via dashboards and predictive analytics.
TCS has also launched an AI playground, where its employees can now safely and securely access various generative AI platforms and a curated set of startup technologies from their COIN, or Co-Innovation Network partner.
Infosys
Infosys CEO Salil Parekh said that its generative AI capability set, Topaz, is helping them deliver more value and increase market share. “We are currently working on over 90 generative AI programmes. Our work is with proprietary and open-source large language models,” he added.
He said that the company continues to make investments in generative AI as it looks to help its clients navigate the way forward with deep capabilities. So far, Infosys has trained 57,000 employees in generative AI.
Wipro
“We have trained as many as 180,000 employees in basic GenAI principles,” said Wipro chief Thierry Delaporte. He said that the company has rolled out personal-based learning pathways to create a pool of specialised talent with deeper technical expertise. Recently, it also launched a new GenAI Center of Excellence in collaboration with IIT Delhi.
Delaporte said it is rapidly integrating generative AI into its processes, solutions and offerings. “Thousands of our employees have or are starting to use generative AI. Today, we are seeing a doubling of GenAI active projects than we did just one quarter ago,” added Delaporte, pointing out how healthcare, consumer and financial services, high tech and utilities are seeing rapid adoption.
HCLTech
HCLTech also announced a slew of new deals, where it will be involved in digital and cloud transformation, alongside generative AI initiatives.
HCLTech chief C Vijayakumar said that the company is working on a two-pronged approach – for its clients, it looks to generate early-stage opportunities, alongside training its delivery organisation to leverage generative AI for core development, deployment, and testing and managed services. So far, it looks to train close to 18,000 employees.
LTIMindtree
LTIMindtree said that it remains invested in its integration of generative AI into its products and solutions. “We have engaged in over 100+ conversations and have over 20+ active engagements with our clients,” shared LTIMindtree chief Debashis Chatterjee.
Further, he said that it is launching new offerings – Canvas Lite and Canvas Control Claim. The former focuses on productivity use cases for developers, while the latter enables secure, moderated and responsible use of AI with a choice of commercial open-source and custom element models. “We plan to train over 10,000 employees by the end of the third quarter,” shared the chief.
Genpact
In FY23 Q2 results, Genpact said that it expects full-year bookings growth of 25-30% above last year’s level of $3.9 billion. “We have not shared our bookings outlook in the past, given the consistent trends we are seeing, but we thought it's important to do so now as it shows the way our clients are thinking about setting themselves up to leverage GenAI in the future,” said Genpact CEO Tiger Tyagarajan, adding that they have signed closed to six large deals in the quarter.
So far, Genpact has trained more than 70,000 global employees over the past three years in contextual data literacy. “We recently launched a new AI training program that currently has over 20,000 enrollments, with 12,000 members of our workforce having completed the program. We've also trained approximately 10,000 team members on prompt engineering,” said Tyagarajan.
EXL Service
“We will continue to invest heavily in our generative AI capabilities, including creating a centre of excellence with more than 1,500 dedicated generative AI specialists,” said EXL CEO Rohit Kapoor, during an FY23 Q2 earnings call.
The company has launched a new generative AI platform that includes various tools and frameworks designed to help businesses implement AI solutions effectively. It has identified over 120+ use cases and 20+ generative AI demos and looks to add more in the coming quarter.
