A few days ago, in our Endless Origins series of articles, called – Why is Everyone Making GenAI Laptops?, we had predicted that Apple would be launching its M3 chips soon. Today, it all came true.
At the Scary Fast event, Apple unleashed three new AI chips, namely M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, which now help in running large transformer models with billions of parameters seamlessly, all thanks to the extended support for up to 128GB of memory.
Plus, the enhanced neural engine helps accelerate powerful machine learning (ML) models, alongside preserving privacy – which is 15% faster than the M2 family chips, and 60% faster than the M1 family chips.
But, Apple is not alone. AMD is also heavily investing in enhancing edge computing capabilities, reducing the reliance on GPUs. The company recently introduced AMD Ryzen AI, including the first built-in AI engine for x86 Windows laptops, and the only integrated AI engine of its kind.
The same goes for Intel. The company is banking on 14th Gen Meteor Lake. It is the first Intel processor to use a tiled architecture, which allows it to mix and match different types of cores, such as high-performance cores and low-power cores, to achieve the best balance of performance and power efficiency.
Not to forget Qualcomm, as it recently introduced Snapdragon X Elite. The company’s chief Cristiano Amon also claimed superior performance over Apple’s M2 Max chip and comparable peak performance, all achieved 30% less power consumption. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is also investing in edge use cases, and silently working on designing CPUs compatible with Microsoft’s Windows OS, leveraging Arm technology.
Now, the question is, will Apple’s M3 pose a threat to Intel, AMD and Qualcomm? Read the full story to find out.
The Andrew Ng Influence
Andrew Ng is one of the most influential figures in the AI and analytics landscape. He has been teaching the most number of students on the planet, that too without a university. The true OG of AI.
Here is a glimpse of Andrew Ng's influence, and the people he has worked with.
OpenAI, the Startup Killer
Not really. Every time OpenAI releases new features to ChatGPT, it gets blamed for affecting startups built around similar functionalities. OpenAI recently introduced two new features to ChatGPT, namely ‘Upload many types of documents’ and ‘Use tools without switching’.
Long story short, this new ‘multimodal’ update, according to many, is expected to kill hundreds of startups.
But, is that true? Read to find out.
Google’s Gemini Dream
Google’s Gemini was expected to come out this fall, yet, October has fizzled out and there are no signs of the product, which Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis claimed, “Would be more capable than OpenAI’s GPT-4”.
But, Google chief Sundar Pichai, is all about perfection. At the latest earnings call, he mentioned it, saying that it would be released sometime next year. “We are just really laying the foundation of what I think of as the next-generation series of models we’ll be launching throughout 2024.”
