Have you had a happy and successful season out on the water? As the autumn weather starts to become, well, rather autumnal, you may not be setting sail many more times this year but even as you think about winterising your vessel, the National Coastwatch Institution's (NCI) 2,600 dedicated volunteers are still looking out for your safety and helping to save lives.

THE EYES AND EARS ALONG THE COAST

The watchkeepers are highly trained and keep a daily lookout from 59 stations around the shores of England and Wales and a listening ear too on VHF. It's backed by all the latest tech including high power optics, CCTV, weather instrumentation, AIS and radar. Plus a healthy dose of maritime common sense!

DID YOU MEET US AT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW?

The National Coastwatch stand at the Southampton Boat Show was really busy and not even a couple of storms passing through during the 10 day show did not keep the visitors at home.

Our volunteer watchkeepers from many different stations really enjoyed meeting so many sailing enthusiasts. The radio demo kit from iCOM was a great way for people to test their radio skills and we also had some young sailors learning how to be professional on the airwaves.

Watchkeepers were available throughout the show to answer questions from visitors and our daily prize draw became quite an event with well over a thousand tickets handed out on the last day of the show and the grassy knoll opposite the stand must surely be renamed as NCI Hill.

WILL YOU CONSIDER SUPPORTING US?

National Coastwatch relies on generous public support and corporate sponsorship to continue its work as a registered charity run entirely by volunteers – all of whom give up their time freely to help protect and preserve life at sea and around the coast. Funds are always needed for essential equipment, station maintenance, for utilities and to expand the network.

Our aim is to keep you and the maritime community safe – and we're grateful for any support you can give.

VHF CHANNEL 65 – GIVE US A CALL

Helping to minimise the risks of being at sea, NCI stations can be called on VHF CH65 – for a radio check, to provide tidal information, weather checks and live updates on local conditions. They're a friendly bunch and always happy to help you and everyone in the yachting community.

Setting sail? Please show your support!

NO SUBSTITUTE FOR WATCHFUL EYES

HM Coastguard also asks NCI stations for assistance in spotting, monitoring and providing a bearing on a vessel in difficulties. This helps to get the emergency services to your exact location as quickly as possible – essential if your yacht is sinking.
