Hyderabad vs Bengaluru for GCCs

Bengaluru's long reign as India's GCC capital is facing a fresh wave of challengers. Hyderabad has emerged as the country's new greenfield GCC hotspot, and Tier-2 cities aren't far behind.

There's a new GCC hotspot in town, and it's giving Bengaluru a run for its money.

A new report by Xpheno titled 'Telangana: The Next-Gen GCC Powerhouse', reveals that Hyderabad has officially overtaken Bengaluru in new greenfield GCC setups. Over the last three years, 40% of all new GCCs in India have chosen Hyderabad, while Bengaluru settled for 33%.

In just 30 months, Hyderabad bagged 64 of the 164 new GCCs added across India.

In 2025 alone, global names like Eli Lilly and Company, P&G, Marriott, Johnson & Johnson, T-Mobile, McDonald's and American Airlines have set up their centres in the city.

Telangana now hosts 360 GCCs employing more than 3.1 lakh professionals, accounting for around 14% of its total white-collar workforce.

Notably, the state now ranks second nationally in Positive Talent Balance, with a surplus of 6,400 professionals. Around 60% of its GCC workforce is in IT and IT-enabled services, while BFSI, healthcare and manufacturing are among the fastest-growing sectors.

Women make up a solid 33% of the workforce, with 19% in leadership roles—a number that is steadily climbing.

Regardless, Bengaluru still leads in total GCC count—860 centres with 7.4 lakh employees—but its density and rising costs make it harder for new setups to expand.

The state's proactive approach—single-window clearances, incentives and ready IT infrastructure in HITEC City and Gachibowli—also gives it an edge.

Not Just Hyderabad

While Hyderabad is pulling ahead, Tier-2 cities are now joining the race, achieving up to 35% lower operational costs and boosting profitability by 25%, according to industry reports.

Coimbatore has over 60 GCCs and 75,000 professionals, with Bosch, State Street and Amazon among the big names. Kochi is emerging as a hub for AI innovation under the Kerala GCC Framework, housing over 20 GCCs at Infopark.

Ahmedabad is now the largest Tier-2 GCC hub, led by GIFT City, hosting The Kraft Heinz Company, Google and Oracle.

Indore has attracted ₹700 crore in GCC investments and ₹5,000 crore in FDI, with focus areas including automation, BFSI and AI. Lucknow is making waves with its 2024 GCC Policy, offering land and payroll subsidies, while building a 2,858-acre Mega IT City, India's first AI city.

Mysuru, just 140 kilometres from Bengaluru, is seeing spillover expansion, led by IBM and semiconductor projects under EMC 2.0.

From North India, Chandigarh Tricity is rising as a cost-efficient alternative, home to Infosys, Tech Mahindra and a strong SaaS ecosystem. Meanwhile, Mangaluru's mix of small and large 'nano' GCCs—from Infosys to Bose Professional—shows how even smaller cities are getting a slice of the GCC pie.

Bengaluru may still be India's GCC capital, but the next phase of India's GCC story will not be about one dominant city, but a network of fast-rising centres powering global operations from across the country.

OpenAI has officially launched Atlas, a browser that embeds ChatGPT right into your browsing window, so you can ask, write, summarise or even automate tasks without ever switching tabs.

Atlas is now live for macOS users across the Free, Plus, Pro and Go tiers, with beta access rolling out for Business, Enterprise and Education accounts. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are already on the horizon.

The browser's key pitch is simple, but brilliant: ChatGPT goes wherever you go online.

During the demo, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, summed it up, "It's smooth, it's quick and it's very nice to use." Social media, of course, had its say. Many users attribute these traits to Google's Chromium.

"Something's bugging me about Atlas—it's clearly Chromium-based (you can tell from the user agent and UI), but I can't find any credit to Chromium anywhere. No license info, no acknowledgements," a user said on Hacker News.

"Sam realises that his team just made Chrome with ChatGPT as the home tab."

Meanwhile, right around this launch, OpenAI wrote on X that Meta changed its policies so that 1-800-ChatGPT won't work on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. "Luckily, we have an app, website and browser you can use instead to access ChatGPT," OpenAI added in a not-so-subtle flex.

The timing of ChatGPT's Atlas release couldn't have been more intriguing.

Recently, Perplexity unveiled Comet, its AI-first browser designed to automate web workflows. Microsoft's Edge leans deeper into its Copilot Mode. Meanwhile, Google's Chrome has Gemini-powered conversational search, Brave has Leo, Opera has Neon and, now, OpenAI has Atlas.

"Just woke up. Did I miss anything?" Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, sarcastically said on X. In response, users dismissed any cause for concern, noting that it was just another browser in the market.

But Atlas isn't just another search bar upgrade. For power users, an Agent Mode lets ChatGPT handle multi-step tasks like research, analysis or scheduling. It's an early glimpse at what OpenAI calls "autonomous agents".

Yes, it's all built on top of Google's Chromium, which feels almost poetic.

The company that kickstarted the AI boom with ChatGPT, itself built on Google's Transformer architecture, is now wrapping its biggest rival's codebase to take on its core product. This ironically pushed Google to play catch-up with Gemini.

Three years later, OpenAI is doing it again. This time, however, not with a chatbot, but with the browser itself.
