The Great Indian AI Freebie Rush

Google has joined forces with Reliance Jio to offer its Gemini Pro plan worth ₹35,100 free for 18 months to millions of users. This comes weeks after Perplexity did the same with Airtel, and OpenAI announced the rollout of free ChatGPT Go for Indians.

Suddenly, the Big Tech of the West has had an epiphany—the secret to AI adoption in India isn't clever marketing or fancy demos. It's giving away everything for free.

Google's offer takes it even further. Starting with Indians aged 18 to 25, and soon expanding to all Jio Unlimited 5G subscribers across India, Google is rolling out its most generous AI bundle yet, all unlockable directly through the MyJio app.

The plan includes access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google's most advanced AI model, along with image and video generation through Nano Banana and Veo 3.1. Users also get access to NotebookLM, two TB of cloud storage across Photos, Gmail and Drive, and automatic WhatsApp backups for Android, which is nothing short of wild.

Google says the partnership aims to bring "powerful benefits in people's everyday lives" by expanding AI access across India.

But the search giant isn't the only one dishing out freebies.

In July, Airtel partnered with Perplexity to offer a free one-year Pro plan worth ₹17,000. OpenAI is also offering Indian users a year of free ChatGPT Go starting November 4, ahead of its DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru.

Telecom bundles are quickly becoming the new battleground for AI adoption. As Greyhound Research's Sanchit Vir Gogia pointed out, "India has just become ground zero for the global AI land grab.

Meanwhile, Sarvam AI, India's home-grown deeptech startup, just launched Sarvam Diarization, a powerful model that understands who's speaking, when and in which language, even in the most chaotic, multilingual audio.

Sehaj Virk, head of strategy and GTM for Model API at Sarvam, joined us live and demoed the API playground and the new diarization model before diving into the exciting use cases where developers have built upon Sarvam's models and created real-world impact.

The flood of free offers by Big Tech isn't about generosity. It's about shaping user habits, training models and cementing platform dominance in one of the world's largest digital markets

India's scale, diverse data and light regulatory environment make it a prime testing ground for these global models. But there's a catch. Google and Perplexity are utilising private telecom networks to push their tools. Gemini through Jio, Perplexity through Airtel.

The larger issues around this adoption are being glossed over. As Gogia pointed out, who owns the prompts, the data and the content created? Where is this data stored, and under what jurisdiction? What safeguards exist against misinformation, deepfakes or surveillance? And what happens when the freebies end and users can no longer afford the tools they've built their workflows on?

India's rapid adoption of AI appears exciting on the surface—free access, global models and big names. Beneath that, however, lies a deeper trade-off. Data is being exchanged for dependence. Platform lock-ins are being built quietly. And once these free offers expire, millions could find themselves bound to global AI systems they never truly owned.

Hyderabad vs Bengaluru for GCCs

Bengaluru's long reign as India's GCC capital is facing a fresh wave of challengers. Hyderabad has emerged as the country's new greenfield GCC hotspot, and Tier-2 cities aren't far behind.

OpenAI has officially launched Atlas, a browser that embeds ChatGPT right into your browsing window, so you can ask, write, summarise or even automate tasks without ever switching tabs.

Atlas is now live for macOS users across the Free, Plus, Pro and Go tiers, with beta access rolling out for Business, Enterprise and Education accounts. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android are already on the horizon.

The browser's key pitch is simple, but brilliant: ChatGPT goes wherever you go online.

During the demo, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, summed it up, "It's smooth, it's quick and it's very nice to use." Social media, of course, had its say. Many users attribute these traits to Google's Chromium.

"Something's bugging me about Atlas—it's clearly Chromium-based (you can tell from the user agent and UI), but I can't find any credit to Chromium anywhere. No license info, no acknowledgements," a user said on Hacker News.

"Sam realises that his team just made Chrome with ChatGPT as the home tab."

Meanwhile, right around this launch, OpenAI wrote on X that Meta changed its policies so that 1-800-ChatGPT won't work on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. "Luckily, we have an app, website and browser you can use instead to access ChatGPT," OpenAI added in a not-so-subtle flex.

On October 20, a single DNS resolution failure in AWS' US-EAST-1 region disrupted millions of users and businesses globally. The ripple effect was felt across Snapchat, Reddit, Perplexity AI and UK-based banks. This video breaks down what caused the AWS outage.

The timing of ChatGPT's Atlas release couldn't have been more intriguing.

Recently, Perplexity unveiled Comet, its AI-first browser designed to automate web workflows. Microsoft's Edge leans deeper into its Copilot Mode. Meanwhile, Google's Chrome has Gemini-powered conversational search, Brave has Leo, Opera has Neon and, now, OpenAI has Atlas.

"Just woke up. Did I miss anything?" Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, sarcastically said on X. In response, users dismissed any cause for concern, noting that it was just another browser in the market.

But Atlas isn't just another search bar upgrade. For power users, an Agent Mode lets ChatGPT handle multi-step tasks like research, analysis or scheduling. It's an early glimpse at what OpenAI calls "autonomous agents".

Yes, it's all built on top of Google's Chromium, which feels almost poetic.

The company that kickstarted the AI boom with ChatGPT, itself built on Google's Transformer architecture, is now wrapping its biggest rival's codebase to take on its core product. This ironically pushed Google to play catch-up with Gemini.

Three years later, OpenAI is doing it again. This time, however, not with a chatbot, but with the browser itself.
