The six-week pilot program (June-July 2024) at Edo Boys High School showed students achieving two years' worth of learning progress, marking a significant milestone in educational technology. Technical context: Implemented as after-school AI tutoring program at Nigerian high school. Achieved 0.3 standard deviation improvement, equivalent to 2 years of typical learning. Outperformed 80% of traditional educational interventions in developing countries. Showed exceptional results in English, AI knowledge, and digital skills. Demonstrated particular effectiveness in bridging gender learning gaps. Why it matters: As the first evidence-based study of AI tutoring in developing countries, these results could transform global education strategies, particularly in resource-constrained environments. The success challenges traditional teaching methods and could reshape how technology is integrated into education systems worldwide. ChatGPT Tasks: OpenAI's Foray Into AI Agents OpenAI launches scheduled tasks for ChatGPT, marking its entry into autonomous AI assistants, with a controlled rollout starting January 2025. Technical Context: Available for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users across platforms. Uses GPT-4o model with 10-task limit and existing plan usage restrictions. Enables scheduled web browsing, automated information gathering, and recurring reminders. Features cross-platform notifications and task management through web interface and chat. Why it matters: This release represents OpenAI's first step toward AI agents, aligned with CEO Sam Altman's vision for 2025. While currently limited, it introduces autonomous capabilities beyond traditional digital assistants, serving as a testing ground for more advanced systems like the upcoming "Operator" project.
