Hello there! Your AI Human, Amit Raja Naik, is back to unpack how OpenAI's Tasks feature is turning ChatGPT into the ultimate personal assistant—because, let's face it, you probably need it to remind you to read your favourite AIM newsletters in the first place.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has entered its agentic era with Tasks, a feature that transforms the chatbot into your personal assistant. From setting reminders and alarms to delivering daily news briefings or tracking stock prices, ChatGPT is becoming the 'super app of productivity.' As Karina Nguyen from OpenAI explains, "ChatGPT knows when to create or update reminders, ask follow-up questions, and use tools like Search and Canvas."

OpenAI president Greg Brockman calls 2025 the "year of agents," and Tasks is a significant step in that direction. "Whether it's one-time reminders or recurring actions, simply tell ChatGPT what you need and when, and it will take care of it automatically," OpenAI stated. The potential applications are vast. Imagine AI curating your schedule, crafting workouts, or even reviewing your portfolio daily, as Wharton's Ethan Mollick speculates.

While still in beta, this feature hints at what's to come. Voice components, smarter integrations, and OpenAI's upcoming 'Operator' agent are just the beginning.

The question is: With AI becoming so proactive, how far are we from a world without multiple apps?

OpenAI Will Launch the First AGI

sam-fail-1

Sam Altman is certain that OpenAI will be the first to launch AGI—but, in his own words, "no one cares that much." In a recent podcast, he confidently claimed that 20 minutes after AGI arrives, people will be more concerned about what's for dinner. His take? AI's short-term impact is overhyped, while its long-term transformation is inevitable.

"You and I are living through this once-in-human history transition," he noted, where humans go from being the smartest beings on Earth to playing second fiddle.

Yet, while Altman shrugs off the immediate hype, others in the industry debate what AGI really means for jobs, the economy, and society. Will AI lead to mass unemployment or just a redefined workforce? Will universal basic income (UBI) or even universal basic computing (UBC) be the answer?

Too Late to Catch the 'GenAI' Bus?

aim-interview-4-3

India's generative AI ambitions seem stuck at the station while the rest of the world speeds ahead. Despite a booming tech industry and a vast talent pool, the country's lack of foundational research and limited funding have left it trailing behind AI giants like OpenAI and Google.

As Mohandas Pai bluntly put it, "Who will give $200 million to a startup in India to build an LLM?" With most Indian VCs focused on applications rather than deep AI research and IT giants like TCS opting out of the LLM race altogether, the country risks becoming an AI user, not an AI creator

While there's talk of India becoming the "AI use case capital," the bigger question is: Can a nation that missed the GenAI bus still catch up?

Next Big Thing in AI?

Google

Eight years ago, Google introduced the Transformer architecture, one of the critical breakthroughs that paved the way for building AI systems like ChatGPT. Now, the tech giant is taking its next big leap with Titans, a new AI architecture designed to bring long-term memory to neural networks.

Unlike Transformers, which struggle with extended contexts, Titans merge short-term attention with a neural memory module to recall and utilise past information over time. As researcher Ali Behrouz explains, "Titans are more effective than Transformers and modern linear RNNs."

From language modelling to genomics, this breakthrough could redefine AI's ability to process and retain knowledge—marking the dawn of AI systems that truly remember. Check out the full story here.
