Let’s go!  Last Week In AI   AI Scammers Are Stealing Student Aid   Criminals are using AI tools and stolen identities to fake college enrollments, claim financial aid, and block real students from getting into online classes. The problem is now costing U.S. colleges millions.   Key Findings: Fake Students, Real Money: AI chatbots are pretending to be students, joining classes, submitting assignments, and collecting aid money. Huge Numbers in California: In 2024, California colleges got 1.2 million fake applications and saw 223,000 likely fake enrollments, losing $11.1 million in aid. Classes Filled by Bots: Some professors say nearly every student in their class is fake, pushing out real students who need those spots. New ID Rule: To stop the fraud, the government now requires first-time aid applicants to show ID, affecting 125,000 students this summer. Fewer Staff to Catch Culprits: Staff cuts at the federal aid office are making it harder to investigate fraud and help victims fix their credit. Why It Matters: This scam isn’t just stealing money, it’s hurting real students and making college harder to access.
