While it might not be the Star Trek universe, the latest Humane Ai Pin certainly gives that impression. It introduced us to the next-generation personalised human-machine communication device, aka ambient computing.

Many tech evangelists and companies believe that our traditional ways of interacting with machines are flawed. Ergo, the emergence of spatial computing, like the Apple Vision Pro, and ambient computing, exemplified by, Humane Ai Pin.

“Really, with a keyboard and the mouse, which is just so limited,” said OpenAI chief technology officer, Mira Murati, expressing her frustration at the way we communicate with the machines. She also shared her interests in AI and building intelligent systems, in a recent interview with Microsoft’s Kevin Scott.

San Francisco-based Humane is solving this exact problem. Founded by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno in 2018, and backed by Sam Altman, Humane is working very closely with OpenAI to integrate its technology into Humane devices, alongside scaling next-generation communication experience to consumers.

Chaudhri has spent nearly two decades at Apple and has been pivotal in building consumer products such as Macintosh, iPod, iPad, Apple Watch and iPhone. Bongiorno has also spent a little less than a decade at Apple and has been instrumental in shaping iOS and macOS, alongside launching the original iPad.

Their latest device, Humane Ai Pin, is designed to interact with large language models such as GPT-4 Turbo, rather than traditional apps, favouring voice commands over typing. This raises an important question: Could this device mark the beginning of the end of smartphones and lessen our constant screen gazing?

En route to India

Qualcomm’s newly-appointed India president Savi Soin has, in several interviews, disclosed the company’s plans to replicate its successful China model in India. Qualcomm is all set to support the burgeoning local semiconductor ecosystem by licensing technologies to Indian firms and startups contingent upon the establishment of semiconductor fabrication units in the country.

“Our CEO [Cristiano Amon] has said that if fabs or Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSATs) come to India, we are going to bring business here,” said Soin. He said that the team is interested, just like they were for China.

Illuminating OpenAI’s Spark

Fireflies.ai, an auto transcription and meeting notes platform, which is closely working with OpenAI, is planning to come up with its own AI App Store, similar to OpenAI's GPT Store.

In an exclusive interview with AIM, Fireflies.ai chief Krish Ramineni said that users would now be able to build many other apps on top of Fireflies, which means that the AI notetaker is just one app of their conversational data platform. “You can build an app that listens to a conversation and then creates a blog post,” he added, saying that you can also create follow-up emails based on meeting discussions and more.
