Mid-month weird and other AI news and tools post…! It’s a good one, consider upgrading? Paid subs help a lot, because of business expenses I can write off if I have financial supporters. Plus, the end of the year Best Books, TV, and Games post is coming and it’s always big. Happy oncoming holidays! TITAA #73.5: Weird December TalesImage Similarity - Procjam - Museum Labels - Shopify?! - RAG - Myrninerest - Quantum Magic
I was in London for the Fantastic Futures (AI in Museums, Archives, and Libraries) conference a week ago, held at the British Library. That was a terrific conf, but this bit is about the BL itself, which has wonderful exhibitions (Secret Maps was especially intriguing for fans of historical subterfuge in cartography) and an always fab gift shop. Since this is the mid-month weird issue, I feel I need to alert my readers to the excellent Tales of the Weird series from the BL — featuring lots of historical stories collected in various weird themes, with nice story intros on the authors and their place in literary history. This being the classic time for ghost stories, I have bought and am enjoying all 3 of their Christmas/Winter Solstice ghost story collections! There are digital editions for many (even on Amazon), for those of us who need to travel a bit lighter. In other housekeeping: it is mid-December and the next edition of this newsletter will be my End of Year Media Roundup, which will be mostly my favorite books of the year, with also a few standout TV shows and the best games I played. It is paywalled, along with the other media recs posts, but it’s always a giant banger. I may or may not do another regular news post for the end of the month, we’ll see how my link-saving vs. free time looks; December holidays are for coding, accounting, and travels. TOC (links on the Substack site):
This issue is pretty meaty actually, including 👉 some interesting image similarity papers (one terrific one with code), 👉 the surprising achievements of Shopify in 3d web work, 👉 a few more world models, 👉 some Procjam fun toys and game-like things, 👉 a good article on AI in museums with provocations about labels, 👉 outsider art via channeled spirits, 👉 Soup Rooms of digital art, 👉 quantum magic and consciousness pieces, 👉 LLMs not being honest, and weird jail breaks ongoing, 👉 maps in fiction, 👉 new creative writing bench results for the new models out, 👉 a bunch of recent effective (and small) models for embedding, image questions, audio… 👉 tooling for digital humanities folks, 👉 DOOMscrolling, 👉 training for poetry gen with thinking traces, and a lot! more…...
