The early AI unicorns—Stability AI, Jasper, Lightricks, and so on—once known for their commanding presence in the tech world, are showing no signs of profitability, and vanishing into a phase of little or no noise, spurring us to call them ‘AI purrnicorns’.
According to reports, Stability AI is treading on very unstable ground. Several developers who worked on the company’s most important product, Stable Diffusion, are resigning. Emad Mostaque recently stepped down as the CEO of the company. Investors, too, have been unhappy with Mostaque’s leadership, and the startup is now up for sale.
Another such case is Jasper. The Austin-based AI content platform became a unicorn after raising $125 million in a Series A funding round led by Salesforce in October 2022, valuing it at $1.5 billion. In September 2023, the company’s CEO was changed.
Timothy Young, the former president of Dropbox was appointed as the CEO, replacing Dave Rogenmoser. This was discussed as a highly suspicious move in the VC and generative AI startups circles. The worst part is that this came after the company announced layoffs, just months after its funding round.
In the same month, Jasper reportedly reduced the internal worth of its ordinary shares by 20%. This decline suggested a deceleration in the advancement of its AI-driven writing tool. While Jasper has historically depended on OpenAI’s GPT-3 to fuel its product, the emergence of ChatGPT has essentially positioned it as a direct rival.

We have encoded that into something that can express empathy, be super supportive and knowledgeable about any topic that you want to learn about,” said Paolo Pirjanian, founder of Embodied Inc and inventor of Moxie Robot, in an exclusive interview with AIM.

Building Cybersecurity for LLMs
Like the two sides of a coin, generative AI too is oscillating between being a boon and a bane. According to a recent report by Microsoft and OpenAI, while generative AI has had a positive impact in many areas, it has also wreaked havoc for cybersecurity. The report further stated that countries like Russia, North Korea, China, and Iran have attempted to use LLMs like GPT-4 to find targets and improve their cyberattacks.
AI-powered cybersecurity giant Securonix seems to be working on something big to tackle the cybersecurity risks associated with LLMs. Read the full story here.
AI for Social Good
During his recent visit to India, Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, spoke to IIT Delhi students, emphasising the importance of harnessing AI for social good. India, with its myriad social issues, provides an extensive opportunity for deploying innovative AI-driven solutions.
Thanks to India’s diverse, skilled tech talent and vibrant startup ecosystem, the country is poised to fuel technological innovation like no other.
