| Here's what happened! Elon Musk was an early investor and Board Member of OpenAI since 2015. The objective of OpenAI was to develop safe and beneficial AI tools. However, Musk left His position in 2018 due to strategic differences. However, OpenAI claims their split was owing to Musk seeking more control in the operations. Recently, Musk accused OpenAI of diverging from its original nonprofit mission and prioritizing profit over benefiting humanity. Thereby, suing OpenAI for a breach of contract. OpenAI retaliated with email evidence that Musk originally supported the initiative to become a for-profit entity, even willing to merge it with Tesla, and have Musk be the CEO. Musk then demanded that OpenAI change its name to “ClosedAI” to signify its shift away from open source. He even declared he would drop the lawsuit if they changed the name, but OpenAI refused. The catch is, that there were no formally signed agreements or contracts between the parties involved, which defines OpenAI's mission or ethos. Since the whole lawsuit depends on interpreting loose agreements, experts question the merit of Musk's lawsuit altogether. |

What does this mean for the future of AI? There is no denying that the entities we are looking at are two of the biggest players in the world of AI. AI used for the masses practically happened with them. While AI as a technology may remain relatively unharmed, a feud of this scale and grandeur can deeply damage the trust and unity required to collaborate and create something big. This feud extends way beyond the two parties involved. This feud potentially represents the collaborative avenues of AI. Most importantly, the open-sharing and open-sourcing that helps AI progress might halt unimaginably. Of course, not to mention the enormous amount of money and time that will be spent on this. But hopefully, this gets sorted with the best possible outcome, for the sake of AI. PS - Some of my team interns said “this is some major tea spill”, and honestly, I can't help but agree :) |
