Elon Musk appears to strongly dislike OpenAI after the company shifted to a for-profit model and became closed source. He recently posted on X that he would drop the lawsuit if OpenAI changed its name to ‘ClosedAI’, saying that the company needs to stop living a lie.

What if OpenAI agrees to change its name?

AIM asked ChatGPT for suggestions for a new name for the company, and it came up with options like IntelliNet, FuturaMind, QuantumAI, InnovateX and TranscendAI.

However, it is highly unlikely that OpenAI will change its name. OpenAI firmly accepts that not open-sourcing the models is the right way ahead. In an email dated January 2, 2016, Ilya Sutskevar told Musk, “As we get closer to building AI, it will make sense to start being less open.”

“The ‘Open’ in OpenAI means that everyone should benefit from the fruits of AI after it's built, but it's totally OK not to share the science (even though sharing everything is definitely the right strategy in the short and possibly medium term for recruitment purposes),” said Sutskevar to Musk.

To this, Musk replied with a simple, “Yup!”

Why now? Musk suing OpenAI seems well planned. The timing of its Figure investments, alongside Microsoft and others, could have triggered this. Another reason could be to stall its progress or create distractions to help Musk’s xAI and other rivals pick up pace. Microsoft always ends up paying the price.
