| | | | | | Hey there! In today’s edition of Sector 6, your AI Memelord, Mohit Pandey, will take you on a rocket ride to GitHub Constellation 2024 in Bangalore. To sum it up — GitHub loves India’s open-source community. | | | | | | | | “You commit changes, your commit saves lives,” said GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. He emphasised, “By 2027, India will overtake the United States as the largest software developer community on Earth.” India’s open-source community is a remarkable convergence between the world's large population of developers and the new-found possibilities of AI. | | | | | | | Coding in Hindi all the way | | Addressing the misconception that India only consumes open source without contributing to it significantly, Dohmke highlighted India's active participation in global open-source projects, clarifying that identity and background are irrelevant in the open-source ecosystem. “It doesn’t matter what religion, nationality, or where I'm sitting in some org chart, none of that matters in open source,” added Dohmke. Karan MV, senior manager, international developer relations at GitHub, demonstrated Copilot Workspace live on stage, asking it a question in Hindi. "You needn't speak in English to code, create, or participate in open source," Dohmke said. | | | | | | | Satya Nadella also declared this at Microsoft Build 2024. “Every person can now start programming, whether in Hindi, Brazilian, or Portuguese, and bring back the joy of coding in their native language,” said Nadella. The barriers to entry are crumbling, making software development more accessible to the general audience. “Coding is as simple as the thoughts in your mind, and now you can see how natural language is the most powerful thing you have.” | | | | | India’s Open Cloud Compute | | Speaking of open source, the Indian cloud market is also poised to leverage open cloud compute (OCC), reaping the benefits of open source. People+AI is on a mission to develop an interoperable cloud computing to democratise compute in India. | | | | | | | | | | | According to Tanvi Lall, the director of strategy at People+AI, an OCC will be significant for students and research institutions that need compute for their research work, hackathons, etc. Dohmke concluded the session quoting Mohandas K. Gandhi: “The future depends on what you do today. You are building your own future here in India.” India is definitely leveraging AI in the best ways possible. But could AI have prevented the exit poll mess in India? AIM spoke with Matteo Serafino, chief data scientist at KCore Analytics, a data research company that predicted voter preferences using AI. It did so by collecting data from people’s online activities on social media—what they were reading, writing, and reacting to. | | | | | | | | | Since 2017, AWS has trained over 5.5 million people in India on AI and cloud skills and over 8.3 million across the APAC and Japan regions. “We want to democratise and simplify generative AI so that customers can innovate and scale through AWS services. Keeping responsible AI as our goal, we work backwards from customer needs and provide what they require,” Guru Bala, head of solutions architecture, AWS specialised services, told AIM at the AWS Summit, Bengaluru.
