Just when we thought we'd seen it all in AI corporate drama, another episode premiered this week.
Thirteen brave souls from top AI companies— OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and others have taken a stand against AI.
They co-penned an open letter claiming that AI might just be the new boss from hell.
In the open letter, they have warned about:
- The Risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI): The letter discusses how AI can be used to spread misinformation and manipulate people. There is a concern that AI could pose serious dangers to humanity, and AI experts and leaders are aware of these potential problems.
- Insufficient Whistleblower Protections: The authors point out that current whistleblower protection laws aren't strong enough. Since many risks posed by AI are not yet illegal, people who want to report these risks lack adequate protection and may be afraid to speak up.
- The Threat of Retaliation: The letter highlights the fear of retaliation employees face if they criticize risky AI practices. It calls on AI companies to ensure they do not punish whistleblowers and to foster an environment where concerns can be openly discussed.

They warn that AI could snatch our jobs, be a bad influence, and maybe even plot world domination (okay, maybe not today).

While the letter reads like a blockbuster script, it has the AI community in a panic.
Only 13 signatures? It feels like someone threw a house party for the whole office, and only the closest work buddies showed up. And half of them were wearing invisibility cloaks (read: anonymous).
Meanwhile, OpenAI, possibly feeling red-faced, is backpedaling faster than a cyclist going downhill. They’re promising no more nasty non-disparagement clauses (a contractual provision that prevents one or both parties from making negative statements about each other).
