If you've followed CES 2024 closely, you will likely have seen numerous automotive announcements. However, the one that particularly stood out was the launch of Mercedes-AMG's MBUX SOUND DRIVE, in collaboration with Will.i.am.
Mercedes said it uses a suite of sensors and advanced software that make its system interpret various driving dynamics like recuperation, acceleration, steering, and braking, and convert them into musical expressions – allowing the driver to ‘compose music’ in real-time.
“The driver now is the composer and the car is the instrument. Imagine being able to create and commute where the vehicle is not just an instrument, but an entire orchestra,” said Will.i.am.
Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it had integrated ChatGPT within its in-house multimedia system MBUX Voice Assistant as part of an exclusive beta programme. Currently available in the US, this feature allows drivers to engage in more dynamic conversations with the AI system.
More recently, Volkswagen integrated ChatGPT within its infotainment system. This would be available across VW’s lineup, including Tiguan, Passat, and Golf, as well as the automaker’s family of electric vehicles.
Similarly, BMW has partnered with Amazon to introduce new LLM-powered Alexa in its cars. “Nobody likes to read the manual, so it’s very convenient when you can simply ask the car anything you’d like [to know],” said Simon Euringer, head of BMW intelligent personal assistant.

Making AI ‘Civilised’
The present-day AI system is smitten with hallucinations. For some, it is a feature (and not a bug); for others, it’s just frustration. The latter keeps Amitava Das, a professor at the University of Southern Carolina, worried, paving the way for what he calls ‘Civilising AI or Constitutional AI’. Read the full story here.
